HistoryB2V | HPD Participation | Sponsors Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay RaceAlso known as B2V, this relay race is the largest law enforcement event of its kind in the world. The annual race is 120 miles with 20 stages of varying length from approximately 4 to 8 miles long. The course, as run in 2007, begins 20 miles north of Baker, CA on Highway 127 to Shoshone, CA; then northeast on Highway 178; across the Nevada State Line on Highway 372 to Pahrump, NV; then southeast on Highway 160 to the finish at the intersection of industrial and Sunset in Las Vegas, NV. Chuck Foote, general manager of the Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club, Inc. (LAPRAAC) and Larry Moore, LAPD Athletic Director, started the race in 1985 with the purpose of promoting teamwork, camaraderie, physical fitness and competition. The first Challenge Cup Relay was 119 miles long with the start line located on California Highway 127 in front of Baker High School and the finish line at the intersection of Nevada Highway 160 and Blue Diamond, 13 miles short of Las Vegas. Nineteen teams participated in the first relay race with 400 people attending the awards ceremony. In 2007, 227 teams participated from all over the world including Queensland Australia, South Wales England, Calgary Canada, Berlin Germany, and throughout the United States. Over 5,300 runners and alternates participated and over 8,000 runners, family, friends, sponsors, and race volunteers attended the Awards Ceremony. For 2008 the Baker to Vegas race committee expects over 250 teams. Further history and details can be found at the official Baker to Vegas web site. |

San Diego Harbor Police ParticipationDennis (JD) Morrison started the San Diego Harbor Police (HP) B2V team in 1996. He has participated as either a runner or support volunteer in every race HP participated in since then. HP has participated every year except 2002 and 2003 due to staff shortages after 9-11. Over the years of participation, 70 different HP officers, ranging from probationary officers to the Chief, have participated in B2V at least one year. HP is in the 150 division. Teams in this division belong to departments with 150 or fewer sworn officers. The first year, the team finished 78th overall in a field of 190. Last year the team finished 104th out of 227 teams and 5th in our division. The goal is to concentrate on teamwork and come back with "hardware," the B2V award mug. HP proudly displays all of their "hardware" in the lobby at Head Quarters (HQ). The SDHPD B2V team consists of 20 runners, at least 2 back up runners, 2 follow vehicle drivers, 2 people at the command post and 8-10 drivers and catchers minimum. While the runners must be sworn officers, the rest of the members are volunteers of both sworn and non-sworn employees of the District, friends, and family members. |
